GPL Preview : Sunyani Blues Awaits Spirited Reds

The Golden City Park play host to the iconic clash between Berekum Chelsea and Kumasi Asante Kotoko is match day two of the 2017 season. The dreaded Golden City welcomes the two teams with contrasting fortunes in the opening weekends of the foetal season.

Yakubu Mohammed marked his Kumasi Asante Kotoko debut with a brace to inspire a comeback win over Liberty Professionals in a 2-1 triumph for the Porcupines. The 23 times league champions head to the Berekum with 6 wins and 5 defeats from the previous 16 league matches between the sides. The newly assembled Reds will be without the services of Amos Frimpong, who has been confined to the treatment table for the next four weeks but the exploits of Eric Donkor, the Gyamfi brothers, and the quick feet of Baba Mahama might just be enough to make it two wins in a row.

The host, Berekum Chelsea, welcomes Zdravko Lugarusic and his charges with one eye on their first three points of the campaign, having lost the opening game at Tema. A 2-1 humbling at the hands of Tema Youth handed the 2010 league champions their second league defeat in the last five games.

Having won three of previous five games played on match day two away from home, Kumasi Asante Kotoko are statistically placed on the right side of the pendulum. The record league champions showed enough tenacity and fighting spirit to deflate the egos of Dansoman based Liberty Professional in Kumasi.

With 24 trophies shared as a pair, Kumasi Asante Kotoko remains the flagship club of the two with a whopping 23 titles and 55 seasons in the top tier. The Reds worst ever finish in the league was recorded in 1970 when they finished a dreadful 11th place finish, with Accra Great Olympics annexing the trophy.

The host, Berekum Chelsea, on the other hands, recorded their worst ever finish in 2012/13 season when they amassed 40 points from the possible 120. The 2010 league champions are embarking on their 9th campaign in the 2017 edition with one trophy under their belt.

The Sunday clash with be televised by eight different television stations in Ghana led by Star Times. Which colour rules at the Golden City Park on Sunday? Red or Blue?
